The Tick

The Tick 1-12

How much did I love The Tick when I first read it?  It was my email address in college: thetick@***.edu.  (And yet I never got more than a few episodes into the three tv iterations.)

Going through it again, the first five issues are as good as I remember.  The jokes are all just as funny, the art just as good.  (Ben Edlund’s art is really good, not at all what I would expect from an independent black and white comic.)

"Nigh-invulnerable!"  "Me too!  Me too!"  "Wub wub wub"

Hee, the glasses!

It's like The Foot w/ TMNT.  Everyone's got to rip off Frank Miller.

It's like "What also floats in water?"

Tee hee!

Pockets!

The quality definitely slips in the back half of the run.  The Tick’s delusions aren’t as amusing, the aimlessness of the story a little more glaring.  Not that there isn’t still a treasure trove of zingers:

This has not aged well at all.

I'd forgotten about Man-Eating Cow!

LOVE Hand Grenade Man.

There's something so Ennis' The Boys about this scene.

So true.

I’m thrilled that some of it is still keen and swell.
