The Tick 1-12
How much did I love The Tick when I first read it? It was my email address in college: thetick@***.edu. (And yet I never got more than a few episodes into the three tv iterations.)
Going through it again, the first five issues are as good as I remember. The jokes are all just as funny, the art just as good. (Ben Edlund’s art is really good, not at all what I would expect from an independent black and white comic.)
"Nigh-invulnerable!" "Me too! Me too!" "Wub wub wub" |
Hee, the glasses! |
It's like The Foot w/ TMNT. Everyone's got to rip off Frank Miller. |
It's like "What also floats in water?" |
Tee hee! |
Pockets! |
The quality definitely slips in the back half of the run. The Tick’s delusions aren’t as amusing, the aimlessness of the story a little more glaring. Not that there isn’t still a treasure trove of zingers:
This has not aged well at all. |
I'd forgotten about Man-Eating Cow! |
LOVE Hand Grenade Man. |
There's something so Ennis' The Boys about this scene. |
So true. |
I’m thrilled that some of it is still keen and swell.
