Chicacabra
Tom Beland’s followup to True Story Swear to God is an excellent graphic novel about a girl who finds herself in a Hulk situation with a chupacabra on the island of Puerto Rico. Sure, there’s a supernatural component, but Beland never forgets to ground everything with the same heart and emotional conflict that makes TSSTG so wonderful. This story would be just as good without Chicacabra in the mix; there’s plenty of drama with Izzy, her Tio Tony, and her friends at school.
I hope Beland’s able to get a second GN out sometime soon, more for his own sake than mine.
