Ms Marvel

Ms Marvel

Things I liked

  • Iman Vellani is a great Kamala Khan.  I like that she’s a regular girl in her first role, not some glammed up it-girl actress.  She’s normal, and it comes across on the screen.

  • The positive depiction of Muslim and Pakistani culture.  There’s nothing about it that feels other, and I love that.  It reinforces how people around the world are the same, no matter how different they may appear.  There’s nothing to be afraid of.

  • The writers somehow managed to fit in a history lesson about Partition into the middle of a Marvel tv show.  Most impressive and appreciated; it’s a piece of history of which I knew almost nothing.

  • The emphasis on family.  Kamala’s main support structure feels so real.  Her parents, brother, and relatives are all perfectly cast, and bring to life both how frustrating and necessary a loving family can be.

  • Her mother made her costume!  Her father came up with her superhero name!  So many feels.

  • Nakia’s awesome.

  • All the graffiti-style animations.  So creative and cute.

Things I didn’t like

  • The special effects were surprisingly lackluster for an MCU show.  Not a dealbreaker, but definitely noticeable.

  • Lame villains with the Clandestine.  And what an anti-climactic ending for them.

I’m definitely looking forward to more Kamala Khan in The Marvels.  Can’t wait to see her interact with her idol.
