Sandman: Overture

Sandman: Overture 1-6

One of the few Really Good comics that I remembered almost nothing about.  I only read this every month it came out, and never revisited it.  So this was like reading a new Sandman story for the first time, and that’s pretty cool.  It’s not the best Sandman story ever, but it’s no doubt the most beautiful.  JH Williams brings his absolute best to the table, and it’s stunning beyond belief.  Rarely does the artist surpass Neil Gaiman’s words, but it’s totally (but barely) the case here.

It's not just the quality of the art...

...it's the inventive layouts as well.

And despite their complexity, they're always easy to follow.

Alianora!

What nice way to phrase it.

Heh, not even Dream wants to handle that question.

That comment about holding hands is so sad.

No one mixes art styles on the same page like Williams.

I need to track down more JH Williams.

Storywise, there’s a lot to like.  Gaiman mixes in the thousand-dreamers concept from “Dream of a Thousand Cats” with nods to Alianora from “Game of You” and Morpheus’s rift with Desire.  It’s a prequel leading right up to the beginning of the main series, just like Rogue One, and like that movie, it totally stands on its own merits while making considerable contributions to the canon.

So cool.

I hope Sam Keith gets royalties.

This series was such a nice surprise.
