Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Origins, Ultimatum

Ultimate Spider-Man 121-128

Issue 121: An extended “the dog ate my homework” issue with a cute payoff.

Issue 122: The Shocker finally gets the upper hand on Spider-Man, after being a punching bag for so many encounters.  He loses at the end, of course, but Peter’s not going to treat him as a joke anymore.

Issues 123-128: Venom and Carnage/Gwen return.  At the end of it all, Eddie Brock escapes with the Venom symbiote and Gwen is somehow back from the dead, 100% human.  No complaints from me, it’s great to have something right finally happen to her and for Peter.

SO creepy.

Love this shot by Stuart Immonen.

Ultimate Origins 1-5

Brian Michael Bendis introduces the Ultimate Watcher and reveals that humans created the mutant population in the Ultimate universe - it’s got nothing to do with genetic evolution.  It was all part of the race to recreate the super soldier serum.  Along the way, he appears to retcon both Hulk and Peter’s origin stories, which completely confuses me.  I’d care more if this was a more interesting story.

Ultimatum 1-5

There’s been a lot of ink spilled about this series, mostly negative.  But I can’t help but be impressed by an event that actually kills off a good number of heroes.  I mean, geez:

Also, Jeph Loeb and David Finch don’t skimp on the brutality of this conflict.  It’s not something that I need to see all the time, but it works for something of this scale.

As long as Peter and his friends/family made it through, I’m good to go.
