Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up

Ultimate Spider-Man 15-28

It’s weird; I can’t stop reading these, they’re so freaking addictive.  But the rating is pretty firmly in the Good category.  I would have expected it to be at least Really Good.  I’m not sure what’s missing.  These are super fun, and Brian Michael Bendis does an amazing job with Peter Parker’s characterization.  Peter’s reactions to the various trials and tribulations that are hurled at him are note perfect, a balanced mix of panic, frustration, anger, and resilience.

I really thought Bendis killed her so that he'd have a Gwen Stacy moment.

Things that happen in these issues: First fight w/ Doc Ock.  Spidey humiliates Kraven.  Green Goblin almost kills MJ, then gets carted off by SHIELD.

Liz is so horrible.  I don't remember if this ever has a payoff.

Mark Bagley is really channeling John Romita Sr with his Spidey.

Ultimate Marvel Team-Up 1-8

An excuse for Bendis to create Ultimate versions of whomever he wants with some pretty good artists.

Issue 1: Matt Wagner does Wolverine.

Issues 2-3: Phil Hester does Hulk.

Issues 4-5: Mike Allred does Iron Man.

Issues 6-8: Bill Sienkiewicz does Punisher and Daredevil.

These are all pretty throwaway.  They don’t add to the main title (Peter’s more of a bystander than an active participant in most of these) and I’m pretty sure most of these get retconned by Mark Millar’s
Ultimates and various other subsequent titles.  Were my house to burn down, I’d rebuy these more for Bendis completionist’s sake than a burning need to read them again.

Rating: Fine, Nice for 6-8 (because of the art.)
