Preacher

Here we go, the last box!  There are still some things on the shelf that I haven’t gotten to for various reasons: Nightwing (Still in progress); DCeased (Almost, but not quite, done); Injustice 2 (I just read it, and really don’t feel like re-reading it so soon after)

Preacher 1-17

The first seven issues are very much like Sandman; Garth Ennis is still feeling out the characters, figuring out the tone and what it is he’s trying to say with the book.  Same with his partner in crime, artist Steve Dillon; the art style hasn’t settled into its final form, the inking uses a finer line, and there’s a lot more noise to it.  (Not in a bad way, it’s just different.)

When we all discover the true extent of these powers.

Soap over in Punisher has a soul mate.

“Until the End of the World,” of course, is like
Sandman 8, where everything comes together for the first time and I’m like, “Ah, this is what Ennis is doing.  This is going to be unlike anything I’ve read before.”  This arc hits as hard today as it did the first time I read it, and I’ve read it many, many times in between.

Chills every time.

The rest of the second trade, with Jesus de Sade and the introduction of Starr (one of the best villains of all time), is just set up for the rest of the madness that’s about to ensue.  It also introduces the main conflict that will come between Jesse and Tulip for the entire run: His inability to trust her as an equal partner.

Needs no context.

I love the elegance of that phrase.
