Captain Marvel 22-26
Brave New World: Carol’s summoned thirty years into the future to help the survivors of a post-apocalyptic New York City. Kelly Thompson has fun coming up with the progeny of present-day heroes (the daughter of Psylocke and Forge, Clint Barton and Natasha Romanov, etc). They’re pitted against the forces of Ove, the child of Namor and Enchantress. It’s a nice Elseworlds-esque story, and Lee Garbett’s art really helps.
The effect of Carol’s visit to the future on her present-day relationship with Rhodey is a well-crafted one by Thompson. It’s the kind of dilemma that I love, similar to Natasha’s emotional devastation with her son over in Thompson’s Black Widow. When your protagonist is physically invulnerable, inflict heartbreaking emotional pain instead.
It’s also very much in line with Carol’s behavior from Civil War II; using knowledge of a potential future to inform her questionable choices in the present. It’s not that I don’t get her thinking, but they’re both situations where both sides are defensible.
