Fables

Fables 59

Bill Willingham devotes an entire issue to answering mailbag questions with tiny Fable vignettes.  It’s ballsy, and he pulls it off with his cavalcade of artists.

Fables 60-70

“The Good Prince” arc.  Flycatcher embarks on an epic, epic quest into the Homelands by way of the Witching Well.  Willingham does an excellent job of making it feel like a big deal, and then executes it to perfection.  This story needs every bit of the nine issues devoted to it.  (With an interlude and an epilogue.)  By the end of it, Flycatcher has his happily ever after with Red Riding Hood (I can’t remember if they show up again in the series), Geppetto’s forces have been drastically whittled down, and the Fables are ready for war.  But Willingham sums it up best:

This is one of those “so close to Pure Joy it can taste it” arcs.  But something in my gut doesn’t think it’s there.
