Ultimate War 1-4
Now this is an effing event. The Ultimates take on the X-Men when Magneto returns and our merry mutants are suspected of collaborating with them. Great Bachalo art (making a quick recovery from the weirdness that was the Proteus arc) with some of my favorite action sequences in all of comics. Every X-Man receives a few panels to shine, and almost as important as the actual payoff is the perfect setup that each one gets.
What a spectacular way to start the issue. |
Colossus' moment. |
I wish they showed more of this showdown. |
Look at how seamlessly the action flows from Beast/Professor X... |
...to Black Widow, to Iron Man... |
...to Wolverine. Wolverine!!! |
Great Iceman splash to close it out. |
There’s no reason why this couldn’t have been part of the main Ultimate X-Men title, but I don’t really care.

Ultimate X-Men 27-33
The actual Magneto arc. A much better story than the last few disappointments. But what’s more interesting than the fight against the Master of Magnetism is the escalation of the Jean/Scott/Logan love triangle. While that dynamic is hardly new, Mark Millar takes it to a level that I’ve never seen before. Logan actually tries to kill Cyclops in order to get Jean. Whaaaattt. I actually love it. This is what the Ultimate Universe is supposed to allow.
Way more graphic than I expected. |
Sweet little moment. |
