Byrne Fantastic Four, Bendis New Avengers

New Avengers 14-15
Hey look, Jessica Drew talks with Captain America for a whole issue, and it’s great.  Imagine that, Bendis is good at that sort of thing :P

Frank Cho was not as good, which I did not think I’d be saying.  He’s capable of gorgeous work, but there are some serious missteps here.

Not an attractive Cap.  What's with the overbite?

At the end of the day, it’s still not that interesting of a story.  I’m waiting for something interesting to happen.

Something cool: Seeing how two artists draw the exact same scene.

Rick Mays.

Frank Cho

Fantastic Four 269-272
Following up yesterday, I was destroyed in my guess of Byrne’s handling of Sue’s miscarriage;   A substantial amount of time was spent on it.  Mostly as a way for Reed to marginalize his wife and ignore her opinions, but at least it wasn’t ignored.

I’ve lost track of the number of times Byrne has used “beautiful” to describe Sue Richards.  It’s as if he has no other adjectives for her.  For all the speeches he has her give about being more than “just a woman,” Byrne himself seems incapable of reducing Sue to her physical appearance.

One of many, many instances.

Some nice art moments in issue 272:
Very creative depiction of teleportation from one location to another:

A simple panel of the FF springing into action, but I like the three parallel lines that they form, slashing across the page.

Hamster wheel!
If Sue is to believed, this is the first appearance of a now-classic maneuver.

And the inspiration for a wonderful scene.
