Wolverine

Wolverine 180-181

A reprint of the first appearance of Wolverine.  It’s staying in my collection as a piece of history and reference, but I doubt if I’ll ever crack it open again.  Two humans trick the Hulk into fighting Wendigo, then Wolverine jumps in and makes it a three-way brawl. Yawn. Len Wein makes an effort to inject some pathos into the story with the humans, but the flowery writing robs it of any true emotional impact.

Wolverine 53, 79, 87, 88, 90, 102, 103
A random scattering of issues that deserves a random scattering of observations:

Issue 53 - A really, really early entry into my collection.  That nostalgia’s the only thing keeping it in my collection. The Larry Hama Wolverine, in general, never grabbed my attention for very long.  Marc Silvestri has some very amusing dynamic panels.

Nice Jubilee body language

Issue 79 - The one where Cyber breaks Wolverine’s bone claws.  This is towards the beginning of Adam Kubert’s run, and it’s too bad his art isn’t illustrating better stories.

Issue 88 - The one where Fabio Laguna rips off every Jim Lee panel he can find.  CBR covers it in detail, but they missed at least one more:

The master.

So pale it barely registers.

Also, the Wolverine pose here by Kubert is insane, but I dig seeing him contorted like Spidey (or Deadpool):

Issue 90 - The one before Age of Apocalypse where Wolverine finally pops a claw into Sabretooth’s head.  I don’t know why Marvel went for the multiple gatefold pages, but sure, whatever. The fight between the two long time enemies is fun enough that it’s the only other issue from this bunch that I’m keeping.

Love how Kubert draws the hair blowback.

Issue 102, 103 - These are during Wolverine’s feral regression phase, where he looks like a caveman, lost his nose, and stopped wearing boots.  Something to do with losing his adamantium? Anyway, Elektra help him find his humanity here. Or something.

Regret buying: No (Yes for 102, 103)

Would read again: No (Yes for 90)
Rating: Didn’t suck (Nice for 90, Stupid for 102, 103.  Cutting all but 53 and 90)
