Daredevil: The Target, Daredevil: Yellow

Daredevil: The Target 1
Kevin Smith wrote only one issue of this before moving on to more important things.  It was meant to be a continuation of his run on Daredevil, dealing with Matt’s unresolved issues over Bullseye’s murder of Karen Page.

Apparently Smith feels it’s okay to mock foreign accents if a) the accents belong to Arab terrorists and b) the mocking is done by an unrepenting killer (Bullseye).  It still feels like it’s in poor taste.

Glenn Fabry does the rare pencilling gig.  I’m not convinced that I like his work.

Daredevil: Yellow 1-6
Speaking of dealing with Karen’s death, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s miniseries approaches Matt’s coping methods from a very different direction.  Instead of beating the tar out of punching bags and primal screaming, this Matt writes cathartic letters that Karen can never read.

This is way better than their Captain America collaboration.  Sure, there’s grief in Matt’s words, but he doesn’t slip into the self-flagellating spiral that Steve Rogers does.  At the end, he comes to terms with any misplaced guilt he was carrying, and is simply left with the love he has for Karen.  Couple that with Sale’s art, and we’ve got a wonderful little story.

Great early establishing shot of Daredevil.

Which Sale repeats in the final issue when Matt’s in a better mood.
Very “Hit the Jackpot” here.

Beautiful detail where she's playing with her shoe.

The one time Sale decides that Karen Page not only dresses, but also looks like, Grace Kelly.

Not the worst inspiration.
Love the homage to Norman Rockwell.

This prophetic reference to Born Again gave me chills.

Other notes:
Apparently the Purple Man’s aura doesn’t work on the blind.  Jessica Jones would love to have that information.

I kind of want to skip ahead and read Miller’s Man Without Fear, see how these two origin stories tell the story of Jack Murdock’s fall and triumph.
