Bone

Bone TPB 4-6

It gives me no joy to say that the quality of Bone’s story drops considerably over the last two-thirds of its run.  The lighthearted hilarity of the first act slowly bleeds out of the series until all that remains is a grim Lord of the Rings rip off.  (The slog through the ghost circles parallels Sam and Frodo’s interminable hike towards Mordor.  The siege of Atheia mirrors the battle of Helm’s Deep.  Fone Bone’s loyal service to Thorn and key role in assisting her quest to find the Crown of Horns needs no explanation, nor does the immediate collapse of the enemy forces upon completion of said quest.  Then there’s the coronation of the monarch, followed by a long journey home.)

There’s very little fun to be had here, shocking considering how brilliant the first three trades are.  The magical elements are boring, the massive fights surprisingly flat, and the ending completely disappointing.  (And talk about major letdowns when you find out why the Hooded One’s been chasing Phoney Bone this whole time…)  If not for Jeff Smith’s continued excellence with the art, the ratings would be even lower.  

Which isn’t to say there aren’t still highlights aplenty:

Rockjaw had some promise but ended up being a bit player of little consequence.

I don't know how I expected or wanted Fone Bone and Thorn's relationship to end up. I don't know if there's any way Jeff Smith could have made it truly satisfying - the romance was clearly one-sided, even if the love was mutual. All I know is that this farewell wasn't what I needed. Alas.

Bone TPB 1-3

I have super fond memories of Bone.  It was one of the comics I shared with my sister in high school.  It also had the bonus of being one of the best examples of cartooning ever.  Jeff Smith may very be unparalleled in his ability to draw the perfect facial expressions and body language to match his often hilarious writing:  

Perfectly drawn petulance.

Love that hair tuck.

I've used that final lamentation myself on occasion.

Even with static images, you know exactly how he's gesticulating.

Even this side-to-side look is amazing.

Great pad smack.

Along with the body language comes perfect comic timing:

One of the most brilliant sequences in the history of comics.  I'm not exaggerating.

Look at how Fone Bone does the ears!

Okay, this isn't comic, but the timing is impeccable.

Jeff Smith ratchets the tension of the race up to this climax most effectively.

Her hair.

The juxtaposition of that final line with that face.  *Chef's kiss*

Other scenes that are just plain funny:

Ted!

Ted's brother's silhouette is the funniest thing ever.

I remember this series undergoing a severe drop in entertainment value as the humor decreased and the epic fantasy elements increased.  But for now, these three trades are some of the best comics I’ve ever read.  I get so much joy from them, as evidenced by the copious notes I’ve taken of moments that stood out to me.  I'll end with Thorn-related awesomeness.

I love how she's sitting.  So casual and relaxed.

Batman/Catwoman 11

This had better make more sense all at once, because it’s a freaking mess right now.  Tom King’s weakest in quite a while.

Batman: Killing Time 2

This isn’t much better, a bunch of time jumps and set up that make zero sense in a monthly format.

Seven Secrets 16

Aaaand I’m losing interest again.  I don’t know what it is about this series, but Tom Taylor just can’t make it click for me.  Do I need to read it all together again?

Heh.

Captain Carter 2

Superheroes fighting corrupt politicians is rarely fun to read, but Captain Carter is cool enough that this is still enjoyable.

Black Widow 15

Final issue, and that makes me very sad.  I’ll miss the art by Elena Casagrande and Natasha’s lingering trauma regarding her family.  I’ll miss the support system Natasha built around herself, especially the hilarious Yelena.  The stories themselves are surprisingly forgettable, but I don’t even care.

Invincible 127-144

An extremely satisfying ending as the survivors of the final Viltrumite Civil War get to live out their happily ever after.  Casualties include Oliver, Nolan, Anissa, and Thragg.  To be honest, I’m a little OD’d on massive battles with hundreds of participants in Invincible at this point, there’s definitely diminishing returns as I binge this whole run.  But they all feel like organic extensions of the overall plot from Robert Kirkman, so I’m not really complaining.  They just lack the wow factor of the earlier epic fights.

BTW, I love Terra across all of her ages.  A solo series starring her would have been a great spin off.  

So much personality.

This re-read of Invincible was everything that I hoped it would be.  It was fun, brutal, jaw-dropping, and impressive in all the ways I would want a superhero comic book to be.  My thanks to Kirkman, Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley, and the whole creative team.

Nice ending.
