Avengers 72-75
Search for She-Hulk is the final arc in Johns’ run, which was far more entertaining than the ponderous Busiek stories. The more time I spend thinking about Busiek’s run, the further it falls in my estimation. Best to stop thinking about it.
Johns is joined by his Flash partner Scott Kolins. (Immediately after their time together on that title.) Kolins apparently has a severe allergic reaction to any use of black that’s thicker than a line; Shadows are anathema to him, and he relies on the colorist for any kind of shading. This isn’t a criticism, I’m definitely a fan of his art. His introduction of Hawkeye to the proceedings is excellent:
You'd think that if the sun can create that lens flare, it could create some shadows... |
“Search” is a misnomer for the story title; The Avengers find Jennifer Walters halfway through the first issue. The other 3.5 issues are spent in a fight scene. Again, not complaining. Significant time is spent covering Hawkeye vs She-Hulk one-on-one. It’s wonderful and joyous. Hawkeye is clearly having a field day, up until the moment he gets his ass kicked:
Improbably surviving the landing, he turns his antagonistic attentions to Bruce Banner:
It gets worse, Bruce. He's going to shoot you in the head one day. |
Then the Hulk:
Going for the eyes works for Boo, not for Hawkeye. Also love the reaction shot in the last panel. |
Classic bromance. |
