New comics!
Shang-Chi 4
I did not expect something so generic from Gene Luen Yang. Ah well, only one more issue of this to go.
Future State: Wonder Woman 1
The usually wonderful art from Joelle Jones, but the story is a clusterfuck. If this wasn’t only two issues long, I would cancel my subscription now.
Seven Secrets 6
Lots of fun action and a nice setup for the next act of the story. Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo continue to impress.
Batman 75-85
Batman Annual 4
Why is this arc called City of Bane? He barely shows up, and the whole thing is really Thomas Wayne’s show. The villains running Gotham schtick is basically a throwaway and never gets resolved. Alfred’s death is pointless and lame, especially for such a beloved character.
But for all that, this is still a fun read. I’m a fan of Bruce and Selina as a couple, and I like Tom King’s interpretation of Batman as a whole. (The Annual story is magnificent, by the way. What a Batman thesis!)

Love the simplicity and art of Selina coming back. |

X-Men 188-204
X-Men Annual 1
Not sure why I paid what appears to be full price for these trades. I mean, they’re not bad, but certainly nothing I’d ever pick up again. I had to page through the issues again just to write this recap. (The X-Men fight the Children of the Vault, then they fight some guy with Rogue’s powers, then they fight some Shiar monster, then they fight the Marauders as a setup for Messiah Complex.)
Mike Carey writes fine stories, but all of his X-Men sound the same. There’s not much in the way of character moments for anyone. The art by Chris Bachalo and Humberto Ramos is excellent, though.

X-Men: Messiah Complex
Uncanny X-Men 492-494
X-Men 205-207
New X-Men 44-46
X-Factor 25-27
I can not resist a fun X-Men crossover concept. This one is: Everyone fights over the first mutant birth following No More Mutants. Even better, the whole thing lives up to the concept; This is a super fun 13-part epic, totally worthy of its event status. It’s self contained, all the threads have a purpose, and it never loses its momentum. (Except for the Madrox/Layla in the future stuff. Totally not worth the number of pages devoted to it.)

The David Finch covers do a great job of unifying the crossover issues. |

I really like the simple trade dress as well. |

Billy Tan is a Finch wannabe. What's with the limp Cyclops hair? |
